The high voltage line will travel from Sayreville, NJ, under the Atlantic Ocean, to Jones Beach, in Wantagh, up to Westbury substation, and back south to Newbridge Road in Hicksville. More than 5,800 pipes will house the electric line, which will bring 600 megawatts to Long Island. This electricity is expected to be sufficient for 600,000 Long Island homes. The project is the first of its kind in this area, since its $1 billion price tag is privately financed. The lines will be leased to LIPA once the project is complete. Between 55 and 60 Hallen workers will work exclusively on this project, which is expected to wrap up in May, 2007. |
